My kit was put under the "I2a2a-M423-Din-N" category in the I2a project. I'm wondering if M423 is stable enough that I can just bypass that test and go for on of its downstream SNPs. I see that my kit has DYS439=12 and DYS449=31, which seems to indicate L147.2+ (although I don't know enough about Hg I to be able to say for sure).

I don't have a Ysearch because the website isn't allowing new accounts for some reason. My haplotype should be visible at the above project though. My kit number is 263588. Does anyone agree that I should I test L147.2? Any other suggestions?

Your classification (in I2a-Dinaric) is quite clear. You could order L147.2, but keep in mind that FTDNA will never recognize it as a clade SNP because it recurs in several different haplogroups. You could order L621, which FTDNA and National Geographic will consider the SNP for your clade. L621 actually embraces the Disles category as well as Dinaric.

Or you could save your money for an upgrade to 67 markers (perhaps the next time FTDNA runs a discount sale). That would probably be of greater value.

I'm not too worried about FTDNA's subclade assignment since their tree is so out of date. Will 67 markers help to identify a subclade though? There doesn't seem to be much variation on markers 38–67 (or on a majority of the markers for that matter). Then again, this kit's closest matches are three steps away at 37 markers, and none of them have the same surname. It looks like a lot of the variation for this group occurs in the first 21 or so markers.

(By the way, this kit is my maternal grandpa's—not my own.)
