This board doesn't look too active, but hopefully someone sees this.

I recently got my full mtDNA sequence. FTDNA reports my haplogroup as H4a. I can't find very much information on haplogroup H4, but I did look at the tree on PhyloTree.org and determined that I have the SNP for H4a1 (14365T) but no SNPs downstream from that (8269A, 15497A, 7356A, etc.) I have four matches on FTDNA, but I'm not sure that any of them are relevant. Three have only tested HVR1 and HVR2, and the other doesn't have any useful information listed. MitoSearch doesn't list any other matches for me.

What information can I find out from my results? I don't really know what any of my specific SNPs mean. I did notice that one of my SNPs is shown as "A825t." Not sure what the lowercase T means. I also have nearly 40 RSRS differences. I wasn't sure if that many differences was normal.

Anyway, any info that anyone might have would be appreciated.

Hi, I don't see you in the H4 project at Family Tree DNA. Please join and I'll take a closer look at your results.

I'm there. I joined right after I got my results. My kit number is in my signature.

Alright, awesome. I still can't find much info about H4, but I figure a lot of the info I find on the internet will just be about H1 or H3.

Check out my post on the general Haplogroup H forum - There is a major new paper published on this haplogroup in Nature Communications on Apr. 23, 2013. Very enlightening on H4, as well as H3.

I haven't seen any further discussion on the H4a subgroup, so I will add some of the findings of the great article published in NATURE COMMUNICATIONS in April 2013. Entitled "Neolithic mitochondrial haplogroup H genomes and the genetic origins of Europeans", the article is available here: http://www.nature.com/ncomms/journal/v4 ... s2656.html

For H4a the great news is that they found two skeletons associated with a BELLBEAKER CULTURE burial in southeast Germany that were carefully analyzed to H4a, using the most stringent and cutting edge techniques to eliminate any contamination. Thus it associates this mtDNA with this culture, in the period around 2200 BC. This culture was associated with agriculture, including the keeping of livestock, and may also indicate that the origins of the H4a were via the Black Sea, likely through Anatolia (Turkey). The association of mtHaplogroup subclades with specific cultures is just beginning, and indeed the techniques only developed in the past three years for carrying out this meticulous work.

I am also an H4a, with earliest known ancestor from very northeast Lincolnshire (Wrawby), which in my mind may indicate a connection with Danish or more likely Frisian immigrants during the period following the fall of the Roman Empire (say from 500 to 800 AD). Although H4a is quite uncommon, I understand it has a certain rise in Frequency in the Frisian region around the borders of northern Netherlands and adjacent Germany.
