Hi all,

I would like to open the topic on H13, as almost everywhere is stated that:

H13 is an uncommon branch and is found at low frequencies in Europe, the Near East, and the Caucasus. Further research will better resolve the distribution and historical characteristics of this haplogroup (FTDNA site http://www.familytreedna.com/haplogroup-h-subclades.aspx)

I am H13a1, Bulgarian, with most distant maternal ancestor born in around 1820, Bulgaria, Kalofer.

When Googling H13 up this scientific paper came up first:
http://mbe.oxfordjournals.org/content/24/2/436.full.
The paper states that the highest occurrence is in the Dagestan population.

Yesterday, March 19, 2013, my mother's sister's husband results came in from 23andMe. To my surprise he is also H13a1. My maternal line is from south of Bulgaria, Kalofer - Plovdiv, while his is from north of Bulgaria, village Bebrovo, near Veliko Tarnovo. Based on this I assume that this subclade could be reasonably well presented in Bulgaria.

This is in contradiction to the results of the 2011 paper "Bulgarians vs the other European populations: a mitochondrial DNA perspective" http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00414-011-0589-y.
The paper has tested 855 subjects. The research did not identify any H13 subject, which seems strange to me, and I am inclined to question the way the samples were collected and how statistically representative they are.

Did you do a full FGS test?
subclades of H13 are also found in India

Yes, I did with FTDNA.

In the signature all the 3 mtDNA is FMS. We also submitted the three sequences to Genbank.

My mother's sister's husband tested with 23andMe, he recently submitted a kit to FTDNA for Y-DNA, and most probably he will do the FMS

The Bulgarian mtDNA study did not test for all known subgroups of H, only the most popular. They did not do the full sequence, but like FamilyTree tested for several key SNPs in the Coding region.
There are at least 4 Bulgarians listed as H, which have your mutations 244 399 207 263, so they are probably H13.

There is also another Bulgarian in the Bulgarian DNA project, who is H13a2b2, but is CRS and it is very hard to tell which other H* CRS could be the same subgroup without the FGS test.

Hi

I am a member of H13a1a1. My earliest known maternal ancestor was Nellie Brooks , born for 1880 in London, England. I took the FMS test at Family Tree. My FMS matches appear to be British descent persons.

Keith,

there is a new paper on Iranians, there is a lot of info on H13
http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0080673

Also there is a FTDNA project H13 - where you can see all peolpe designated as H13 an subclades of H13
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/mtdna_h13/

and the facebook group
https://www.facebook.com/groups/396615513748743/

Did you submit your FMS to Genbank?

@ ElenaK

I joined the Family Tree H13 Project. I am number 208920, and my maternal ancestor was Nellie Brooks H13a1a1. The closest match in the project is Mary Gore. I joined two Facebook groups, and I don't know much about Gen bank. Sorry about the delayed response as I have not been active on the Molten boards lately.
